The Tea and Toast Show & The Encore Show
For our Assignment we were to produce two radio shows. The radio shows had to very different styles and targeted to different audiences. We were arranged into groups and my particular group was of a group of 10, Laura, Sam, Georgie, Esme, Adele, James, Ollie, Jess, Millie and I. We decided to have 2 groups within this group to create each show. We all took part in helping design and research into the target audiences. Each person was given a job to complete and the job role they would carry out on the day of the broadcast. I was the script writer and presenter of one of the shows. Our first show was our breakfast show called The Tea and Toast Show and our second show was called The Encore Show which was our musical show. Firstly in creation to our breakfast show ‘Tea and Toast’ we researched many shows to help us produce a show for our particular audience. We looked into Radio 1s Chris Moyle’s breakfast show which is very popular with a wide range of listeners. We listened carefully into how he presents and their use of music etc. We found they use cheerful sound beds and bold idents to grab the attention of the listeners and keep them interested in the rest of the show. We listened to the presenter and his use of language. We discussed how chatty and natural he sounded on air this is what we wanted to achieve. Sam, Adele and I were presenting the tea and toast show which was great as we all have big personalities and the excitement bounces off each of us which made the show more comical. The Strengths I felt the show had was the fact that we didn’t need to read off the script and talked naturally to each other. Some times reading off a script can come across too rehearsed and staged which is boring. We had the freedom to talk about the topics in the show. We used the script to help us if we were stuck or needed some guidance on introducing the next link. The problem that comes across in more that one presenter is called ‘double heading ‘According to Wilby Pete, The Radio Handbook, Routledge: London, pp 140 “The Two main hazards in co-presenting are: The presenters have such a rapport (bond) with each other that the listener feels excluded and the presenters ‘trip over’ each other verbally by inadvertently interrupting each other or overlapping their speech so that the listeners cannot make out what they are saying” From this quote I think sometimes we did speak over each other without even realising which made it very hard for the listeners to understand what we were talking about. This happened alot when playing the lyric game as we were all into playing the game we forgot about what the listeners would be hearing. At times the levels distorted which was down to being too excited over the microphone and distorting the levels. We will take this into account for when producing our next show and work around the problems that occurred.
For our second show we produced a musical based show which would contain facts and songs from different musicals. What we involved into the show included Musical reviews, a Musical interview with the cast of hairspray, in the life of a ‘’muso’’ and also the small quizzes we had on our facebook pages which were also broadcasted live on the show too. The style of this show was very different from our previous show; we chose to look into BBC 4 Elaine pages show on a Sunday which included musicals which was similar to ours. The problem about this show was that it was quite boring and lacked entertainment. This show was focused on an older audience around 25+. What we wanted to do was follow the same paths of the Elaine page show however keep the show fun and entertaining for anyone who wants to listen including the students around the college. The presenter was Esme which we felt was a great choice for this style of show as she has a very calming and relaxed voice which was keeping in the style for our target audience. The only main problems we felt we had with this show was the fact the presenter read too much from the script and felt like it was being read and not natural. What we wanted was to keep the calm and angelic style with the natural speech of the previous show. I think this was all down to being too rehearsed which the other show lacked of.
What we did to entertain our viewers watching around college and online myself and Laura decided to take part in some dancing around the radio studio to add abit of entertainment to the show. We all enjoyed having a dance and even the presenter joined in with the fun. It’s said “if you’re having fun your audience/listeners will too” I think we proved that statement with our shows. We all put our hard work into making the show an entertaining and enjoyable show I just hope that was proved by our listeners who tuned in.
I feel both Broadcasts matched their intended purpose and exceeded my expectations. Each show had its faults and its pluses but overall was enjoyed by our peers and college students who stated how much they enjoyed it.
I felt as presenter for The Tea and Toast show I need to control my levels of ‘’excitement’’ and some points in the show the chatting between presenters got slightly carried away and we then became less direct towards the audience. Within the live radio quiz I didn’t realise how loud my voice was and distorted the levels. I think this show helped me understand in areas I got wrong and what I can do to improve them in the future, for example when I did distort the levels I will now learn to control my voice and the proxemics between my mouth and the microphone. This will help control levels and the pitch of the show. My inflection within the show was quite high as I was very energetic and being joyful towards the listeners as our show was for the morning.
When creating our radio show looking back at my analysis was very important for getting our target audience correct by looking at my research and looking at the comparisons I took. Focusing on modes of address and the 4ps it was then easier to break down what we wanted our show to include. My Asian network analysis fitted to the morning style we wanted to create for the tea and toast show as they use high inflection, energetic tones and entertaining dialogue. The Asda radio show in some parts did fit with the style we wanted for our 2nd show ‘’The encore show’’. This was because of the slow paced, direct speech and low inflection to target and older audience .The problem I felt could occur with the encore show is that it could stop easily. This is because the amount of musical songs will slowly run out over time and no songs could then be played. If every show was just repeating the songs played each week there wouldn’t be a problem but then for the listeners who like to listen to every show this would be a problem as they will get bored and we will then loose listeners.
