RE-SUBMISSION RADIO ANALYSIS 43.1

Music based programming

43.1

Radio 1 (AnnieMac)

The Annie Mac show on radio 1 is a music based show, which is presented on a Friday night at 7:00pm till 9:00pm and is a "warm up for the weekend". The show is played at a prime time of when people are on their way out on a Friday night or even staying in and getting excited for the weekend. The show is very upbeat and fresh. The target audience for this show is around 16-26 due to the fact the presenter is a popular young character and that comes across in her show. By researching into her show I found out that her show was played at the time of the night for when the weekend starts which is exactly what would attract younger audiences because they will be going out and enjoying themselves.

The presenter Annie Mac uses alot of mini mixes and Djs in her shows, which also helps become more popular as alot of young listeners, enjoy the djs songs played on her show. The show is played live every Friday but is kept on her webpage until the next show is played. You can also download podcasts, which is again targeted towards younger people as they enjoy having them on their phones/ipods.

The show uses vibrant idents, which are loud and cheerful which represent the style of the show being exciting and fun. The first ident heard on the show was " Radio 1 with Annie Mac, the only place to be on a Friday night!" To use a bold introduction will catch the attention of the listeners straight away and will make them want to listen. Just listening to the ident at the start griped me straight away and kind of tells us already of how the shows trying to target a certain audience by the way its being said. The presenter talks in a chatty, bubbly tone but has long pauses due to the fact the song playing in the background is the next song being played
on air. Annie Mac is very well known for her great dj skills and is great for talking about the genres of songs and artists that’s why her show uses a lot of variety of music. Anybody who enjoys dance/base/house music would love this station however the fact the presenter is of a younger age immediately focuses on the younger audience.

The presenter of the show uses very informal language that is great for the target audience as they are younger and feel more comfortable as she’s chatting instead of informing seriously like a radio station Bbc wm. The tone of the show is very upbeat this is because she’s trying to get the listeners in the mood for a night out and this also comes across in her music and the sound beds that were very upbeat. The presenter of this show is very direct she’s always talking to the listeners about what music’s up next and some facts about it. The projection of her voice is quite energetic and filled with excitement that fits the style of the show. The pace of the show is very fast which fits the genre of the show.

Asda fm Live in store Radio

In store Asda have created their own radio station, which is then played throughout while customers are shopping. They introduce charts old and new which is great to target different audiences. Its very clever how they have created their own station as not many retailers do this they would play a cd with songs on. This station influences shoppers to by a particular product as they talk about what’s on special offer in the store or what meals can be made from a low cost which is great for targeting parents shopping for family’s. I think the target audience for this station is for families and people between 20- 50. This is because I believe students will be looking for low costs food, which is presented on air and how to make quick easy meals. Also parents for family meals looking for non-expensive meals to cook at home.

The presenter uses a very formal tone to his voice that is great for informing customers of what’s in store. However aswell as being quite formal he uses happy and cheerful tones throughout. This is because he is trying to focus on making the customers feel at ease when shopping around and at the same time introducing them to what’s in store. I feel this is an advantage to Asda that they have introduced a live radio as not many stores do this which i think is a great idea.

This show is completely different to Annie Macs show. This is because the target audiences are completely different by the way the presenter talks, music on the show and the overall style. The Asda radio also doesn’t involve sound beds which Annie Macs show does which also links in with what audience they are trying to capture and how they entertain that audience.

I found this station had very formal presenters which came across in their speech and spoke very directly to the listeners. I think this style was best for what the target audience was for shoppers. The pace of the show was very slow which gave time for the audience to take in the information given but the risk of a slow paced show is that is can become boring which can lose listeners. The pitch of the presenter is of a low inflection this is because he’s informing us of what’s at the supermarket and not particular trying to entertain us. This station is not a music based station as you can tell by listening however songs are included which are of a variety which can be enjoyed by everyone as they would use music beds often and include more music rather than dialogue. I found the pauses quite long which is building anticipation for the listeners wanting to know what other offers are in store.

BBC Asian Network

This is a show brought to you from the BBC which is called Asian network. The show I will be talking about is the weekend mornings show which is on air at 7 till 9 to wake up the listeners on the weekend. The sounded behind the presenter is Asian music that links in with the style of the show, which is " Asian network". The presenter has an Asian accent that then again fits in with the style of the show, being Asian also helps the audience feel the link of Asian music which all fits in with each other. Using Asian presenters will help make the listeners feel comfortable as using a British presenters would maybe confuse listener’s into thinking it’s a British based station and not an Asian one.  He also speaks quite slowly but at a face pace which tells me he’s focusing on a target audience of around 27- 48 because being more fast paced is focusing on a much younger audience who listen to very informal stations. They also use idents, which are quite and not in your face like " Good morning" " welcome" rather than The Annie Mac show they use idents such as “ the place to be on a Friday night!”
The songs played are of a wide variety, slow and fast paced which is great for everyone. The start of the shows song is very slow which is because it’s a morning show and is slowly waking up the listeners. The songs then gradually become more upbeat as the morning progresses.

While listening to the show I realised the presenters have a high inflection. They use this technique to waken the listeners and also draw them in by being friendly and happy. Pace of the show is quite slow without being boring which down to the way the presenters speak and the way they use sound beds behind the dialogue to liven up the speech. They introduce each song with a pause, which gives a time for the presenters to play the song they are introducing. The pauses the presenters used are for the audience to catch up and steady them as they are gaining some information about what’s coming up. They also use pauses to give time to play a song. The presenter’s projection of the show is very energetic which provides a sense of joy to the listeners. They’ve used this style of projection to liven the audience. The proxemics of the presenters is spaced quite far from the microphones they do this as they can speak a lot loudly and more energetic. They could be close to the microphone, which would be a lot more personal to the listeners and intimate. As it’s a morning show using energetic tones and being more joyful will awaken the audience. The tone of this particular show was very light hearted and informal. This fits better with the style of the show as using a formal style would defer the fact that the presenters are trying to wake up the listeners in the morning. The also are indirect as they chat amongst themselves which can be come across as if the listeners are being forgotten, however this shows has a very chatty style but still realizes the listeners when they then introduce the songs and talk about what’s up next.

All the shows stick with the styles of the shows by sticking to their modes of addresses, which help gain their intended audiences. I feel the main problem each station involves is the target audiences they cover for example Asian networks main audience is that more likely the audience will be of anAsian culture which lowers the listening figures as the population in Britain have more British than Asian cultures.  The radio 1s Annie Mac shows audience is for ages around 16- 24 which really narrows the listeners for the show as they are more student based rather than small children , senior citizens and families. The shows that would target all audience would be shows like heart and brmb which have a variety of songs and speak with energetic but serious tones. Asda fm targets families and middle aged listeners. This straight away rules out young children and teenagers. Students who attend university might be able to gain from this station as they introduce meal deals and low priced foods which they might be interested in.

Radio Evaluation
The Tea and Toast Show  & The Encore Show
For our Assignment we were to produce two radio shows. The radio shows had to very different styles and targeted to different audiences. We were arranged into groups and my particular group was of a group of 10, Laura, Sam, Georgie, Esme, Adele, James, Ollie, Jess, Millie and I. We decided to have 2 groups within this group to create each show. We all took part in helping design and research into the target audiences. Each person was given a job to complete and the job role they would carry out on the day of the broadcast. I was the script writer and presenter of one of the shows.  Our first show was our breakfast show called The Tea and Toast Show and our second show was called The Encore Show which was our musical show.
Firstly in creation to our breakfast show ‘Tea and Toast’ we researched many shows to help us produce a show for our particular audience. We looked into Radio 1s Chris Moyle’s breakfast show which is very popular with a wide range of listeners. We listened carefully into how he presents and their use of music etc. We found they use cheerful sound beds and bold idents to grab the attention of the listeners and keep them interested in the rest of the show. We listened to the presenter and his use of language. We discussed how chatty and natural he sounded on air this is what we wanted to achieve. Sam, Adele and I were presenting the tea and toast show which was great as we all have big personalities and the excitement bounces off each of us which made the show more comical. The Strengths I felt the show had was the fact that we didn’t need to read off the script and talked naturally to each other. Some times reading off a script can come across too rehearsed and staged which is boring. We had the freedom to talk about the topics in the show. We used the script to help us if we were stuck or needed some guidance on introducing the next link. The problem that comes across in more that one presenter is called ‘double heading ‘According to Wilby Pete, The Radio Handbook, Routledge: London, pp 140 The Two main hazards in co-presenting are: The presenters have such a rapport (bond) with each other that the listener feels excluded and the presenters ‘trip over’ each other verbally by inadvertently interrupting each other or overlapping their speech so that the listeners cannot make out what they are saying”  From this quote I think sometimes we did speak over each other without even realising which made it very hard for the listeners to understand what we were talking about. This happened alot when playing the lyric game as we were all into playing the game we forgot about what the listeners would be hearing. At times the levels distorted which was down to being too excited over the microphone and distorting the levels. We will take this into account for when producing our next show and work around the problems that occurred.
For our second show we produced a musical based show which would contain facts and songs from different musicals. What we involved into the show included Musical reviews, a Musical interview with the cast of hairspray, in the life of a ‘’muso’’ and also the small quizzes we had on our facebook pages which were also broadcasted live on the show too.  The style of this show was very different from our previous show; we chose to look into BBC 4 Elaine pages show on a Sunday which included musicals which was similar to ours. The problem about this show was that it was quite boring and lacked entertainment. This show was focused on an older audience around  25+. What we wanted to do was follow the same paths of the Elaine page show however keep the show fun and entertaining for anyone who wants to listen including the students around the college. The presenter was Esme which we felt was a great choice for this style of show as she has a very calming and relaxed voice which was keeping in the style for our target audience. The only main problems we felt we had with this show was the fact the presenter read too much from the script and felt like it was being read and not natural. What we wanted was to keep the calm and angelic style with the natural speech of the previous show.  I think this was all down to being too rehearsed which the other show lacked of.
What we did to entertain our viewers watching around college and online myself and Laura decided to take part in some dancing around the radio studio to add abit of entertainment to the show. We all enjoyed having a dance and even the presenter joined in with the fun. It’s said “if you’re having fun your audience/listeners will too” I think we proved that statement with our shows. We all put our hard work into making the show an entertaining and enjoyable show I just hope that was proved by our listeners who tuned in.
I feel both Broadcasts matched their intended purpose and exceeded my expectations. Each show had its faults and its pluses but overall was enjoyed by our peers and college students who stated how much they enjoyed it.

I felt as presenter for The Tea and Toast show I need to control my levels of ‘’excitement’’ and some points in the show the chatting between presenters got slightly carried away and we then became less direct towards the audience. Within the live radio quiz I didn’t realise how loud my voice was and distorted the levels. I think this show helped me understand in areas I got wrong and what I can do  to improve them in the future, for example when I did distort the levels I will now learn to control my voice and the proxemics between  my mouth and the microphone. This will help control levels and the pitch of the show. My inflection within the show was quite high as I was very energetic and being joyful towards the listeners as our show was for the morning.

When creating our radio show looking back at my analysis was very important for getting our target audience correct by looking at my research and looking at the comparisons I took. Focusing on modes of address and the 4ps it was then easier to break down what we wanted our show to include. My Asian network analysis fitted to the morning style we wanted to create for the tea and toast show as they use high inflection, energetic tones and entertaining dialogue. The Asda radio show in some parts did fit with the style we wanted for our 2nd show ‘’The encore show’’. This was because of the slow paced, direct speech and low inflection to target and older audience .The problem I felt could occur with the encore show is that it could stop easily. This is because the amount of musical songs will slowly run out over time and no songs could then be played. If every show was just repeating the songs played each week there wouldn’t be a problem but then for the listeners who like to listen to every show this would be a problem as they will get bored and we will then loose listeners.

Commercial and Public Service Broadcasting

http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/broadcasting/reviews-investigations/public-service-broadcasting/

Public Service Broadcasting (psb) is financed and also controlled by the public. The difference between commercial and public broadcasting is that adverts are involved into commercial broadcasting which is great for ITV, channel 4,channel 5 etc but The public service broadcasting is within BBC television where the public pay a licence fee to be able to watch their networks.

Features for both shows

The Tea and Toast Show

Know your lyrics
This is a feature which is live on the show. We wanted to create a live feature for the show due to the that the other features were recorded. This was also a quiz so it made sense to create this live because of the atmosphere of the quiz. The main presenters Sam, Adele and I took part and was very funny to take part of.

Prank call
This 7 minute feature is a comical pre-recorded feature which is of Adele and Sam who ring up a company and say words which were given to them before the call. They need to make sure they say as many words as possible to win the most points its also funnier if they say as many random words as possible. The prank call has been dome on BBC radio before and is a great way to hook listeners and keep them entertained. The group and i found it very funny to listen to and i believe the other listeners too.

http://www.audioboo.fm/lauraskye

There are a couple tea and toast idents on lauras audio boo.

The Encore Show

Whats the musical?

This feature is a short but comical feature which is basically a short scene from a musical which were acted by the memebers of the group. The feature will then be posted onto Facebook and our youtube page for our listeners to get involved. These will be added onto our pages and is a great way for the listeners to participate. They can add their answers onto our video uploads and we will broadcast them.

Musical review

The musical reviews are pre-recorded which will be played on the live show. There were 3 reviews which were ment to be recorded however at the moment there is only one which i recorded. Hopefully by the live show the other reviews will be recorded and added into the show. I enjoyed writing the review due to the fact i have seen FlashDance and really enjoyed into on stage so it was easy for me to write my opinion. I looked online at the reviews from other reviews to add their opinions to my review which we felt would be truthful and factual for listeners. My musical review for the encore show is on my audioboo. The musical review on my audioboo is the unedited version. The editing version has a cheery soundbed which is added however this version couldn't be uploaded because the size limit was too big. The editied feature will be on out radio show.

Ive purposely picked out from the RAJAR website a couple of figures that are relevant to our shows and also my radio analysis. Our shows are very similar to the radio 1 show in the morning (tea and toast) and radio 2s elaine page show on a sunday(the encore).

 Radio 1
This radio station has been analyzed in my radio analysis from the annie mac show. There's a total of 23% of listeners who tune into BBC Radio 1. There isn't the listening figures for the annie mac show however they have the total BBC listeners and the radio 1 figures  which can estimate how many people listen to the show. Are second show Tea and Toast is a chart show and similar to the morning breakfast show by Chris Moyles. We felt this would be a great show to take our ideas from because of how popular it is and how many listeners the BBC receive.

Radio 2
We took our second shows inspiration off the BBC Radio 2 show with Elaine Paige this is because of the style of show she presents. She uses musicals in her show which is very similar to our show. BBC Radio 2 figures have 27% of the listeners which is slightly higher than BBC Radio 1 which is why we felt that it would be great for the inspiration of our shows. Both radio 1 and radio 2 have a high percentage of listeners which is why it would be great for our group to involve some of their style into our shows.

Asian Network
This radio station is also part of the BBC and is also what i analyzed in my radio analysis. The listening figures for this radio station was just 1% which is a huge gap between the other BBC stations. I thought it would be a great station for me to analyzed due to the fact the music, presenters and style of the show and is very different from the other shows i analyzed.

Primary Research

For both of our radio shows we had to complete questionares for the public about how, when and what radio shows they listen to. This was done because we needed to create our audience profiles. The questionares were completed by hand then entered into a excell document which would then be created into graphs individually.

The 1st graph below is the total questionare answers recieved from the pulbic. The question was asking name your top 3 favorite musicals. The graph shows how many people chose one musical. This question/graph will help us when creating our playlists for the show because we choose the most popular songs to be played on the show to attract a bigger audience.
The second graph shows the times the the public are most likely to listen too. The graph shows that the most lilely time that the public will listen is moring till afternoon. This is great for us to determien when we broadcast our show to atract as much of an audience as possible.

This graph below was the results from the questions that we took from the public for the tea and toast show. What the graph tells us it the amount of people who listen to radio at what time. We are creating a morning breakfast show and from the information we gathered it shows that more people listen to the morning radio than the evening. This helps us understand that we will gain more listeners creating a moring show than an evening one.

This graph shows the amount of people who listen to what radio station. We have taken a simular route from the chris moyles radio 1 breakfast show. We did this because its very popular and a great style of show. As you can see by the graph radio1 has the most listeners which means its great for us because weve taken the radio 1 path.

Treatment for The Tea and Toast Show

Treatment for The Tea and Toast Show

Format
We are going to record this show onto Myriad and also broadcast it on Ustream so there is an online copy available.
Our prank call feature will be recorded onto a Zoom mp3 recorder and edited on Soundtrack Pro.

Duration
The duration of this show will be exactly one hour long. We will be able to do this, as we will rehearse the show before hand and time all the links. Also the scheduler on Myriad will allow us to keep track of the time.

Intended Audience
Our Tea and Toast show is targeting an audience of 16- 24 year olds. The presenting style and the features will therefore appeal to this age group.  The show will be broadcasted around college and advertised on facebook and therefore will reach our target audience.

Synopsis
Our show is going to be presented by Sam, Adele and Amy. As the programme is music based the main content of the show will be the music. We have decided to play tracks that are modern and popular.
We have two features for our show. Know Your Lyrics is when one sentence of a song is said and then the contestants have to guess the next lyric. We choose to have the competitors making an animal noise when they want to make a guess, as this will add another humorous element to the game. We decided to get Millie to present this feature as then it’s different voice for the listeners and allows all three presenters to play along and therefore create more of a competition. We chose this feature as it allows the audience to play along. This feature is going to be live, as this will create a better competitive mood.
Our other feature is a prank call one. Adele or Sam are given 5 words that they have to fit into a phone conversation. This feature will be pre-recorded so that it can be edited so that it’s shorter and all content is suitable.
The content of our links will be informal and relaxed with subjects such as what listeners are having for breakfast.

Style
The style of the show will be informal and chatty. As the show has three presenters it will be very conversational with hopefully some humour.

Rationale
We decided to do a show in the style and for this audience, as we believe that, as we fit into the target audience ourselves, we can create an enjoyable show for this audience. If the presenters are enjoying themselves then the audience will realise this and hopefully enjoy the show too.

Feasibility
This show idea is possible as there is an existing audience and they are easy to reach as the show is going to be broadcasted around the college and the students fit into the age group. The show should be easy to make as we

Budget
We will not need a budget for this show, as all the equipment is available from college.

Deadline
22nd October

Treatment for The Encore Show

Format
Live radio show to be broadcast for children in need.

Duration
1 hour

Intended audience
The primary audience for this show would be middle age women as this group of people enjoy watching and going to musicals, on our ‘test run’ we found that the ladies in the zone (ages 45+) really enjoyed the music and we got some very good feedback from them. However our secondary audience would be people of all ages as everyone enjoys musicals in some form of medium. We found that in our rehearsals we had lots of people singing along and dancing to the well known classics.

Style
As the show’s content is very similar to that of Elaine Page’s BBC 2 show we have chosen to make the style very similar too. We are doing that by having mainly music, a female presenter and lots of facts about each different musical. We also have a interview with a ‘actress’ which is also featured on the BBC 2 show.

Rationale
We believe our show is something different, a style that no one else had chosen to use for children in need. It will be a good ‘break’ from all of the current music and conversation. Musicals are for all ages and we play music that everyone appreciates.

Feasibility
We think this radio show is very feasible as there is such a wide audience for it, it is fun and exiting.

Budget
No budget necessary

Deadline
The show goes live on the 17th November

Presenters For Tea&Toast and The Encore Show

Myself,Adele and Sam
The Tea and Toast show

The presenters of a radio show play a huge role due to the fact they have to hold the show together. Everyones job role in creating a show is very important but talking to the radio and making sure your understood by the listeners is a large resonsiblity. Sam is a very well spoken member of our group and can improvise when in pressure. Myself and Adele have a great sense of humor so i believe we can make the listeners laugh and feel at ease. When choosing the presenters for a radio show its a task we need to make sure fits with the style of the show. For example if the show is for an older audience and older more sophisticated presenter would be more suitable.
An example off choosing a presenter to the style of the show would be like The annie mac show, as shes young, fun and chatty its stuck to the style of the show which is young and fresh. I have discussed this in my radio analysis.

Esme Horne
The encore show

For our second show the encore show as a group we decided to choose Esme as the main presenter of the show. We thought she would e the best role for the presenter due to her soft voice and is well spoken. The show is live so we will be doing as many rehearsals as possible to recieve the best outcome possible. Weve made sure Esme talks slowly and clear for our target audience which are older than or first show. The show is about muscials and the facts which is great for all ages but partiulary for the older audience and the musicals are much older. The presenter will need to make sure she is composed thoughtout the whole of the show and keeps to the pace we wanted to portray. I believe the presenter wil determine our audience so hopely Esme will pull this off and gain as much audience participation as possible.
